Foreword
by Dr. Douglas N. Graham

Progress tends to come in spurts. Like the well-known plateaus that people experience in their personal training, all of our learning is subject periods of hibernation. It takes time to get used to any change, from increases in personal performance to advances in technology. Then, once we get used to the new way and gain some experience with it, even better ways become apparent. Such is growth. That is what this book is all about: bringing the reader to a newfound level of awareness.

Specialization is a strong indicator of growth. Vast waves of specialization have emerged in the raw-food movement over the past few years: raw food chefs, raw food nutritionists, raw authors, raw speakers, raw consultants, and even raw pet experts. Each new aspect of this specialization has raised the awareness of those involved in the movement, making it easier for raw-food enthusiasts to succeed with their own diets or to better perform their outreach or educational missions. Each time someone chooses to focus on a specific area of the raw food lifestyle picture, it has helped those already in the movement, but it has not really resulted in growth of the movement. For growth to occur, a bigger overall vision must be held. That, exactly, is what you will find within these pages-a profoundly new perspective that beautifully merges many varied aspects of the healthful lifestyle.

Let's compare perfecting the raw-food lifestyle to mastering the sport of golf. Golf is an extremely challenging, multifaceted game to play. The number of variables is huge. You may get better and better at one aspect of the game but see no overall lowering of your final score. Practice as you will, golf can remain extremely frustrating, especially if you are attached to the score as an indicator performance.

Then, one day, things come together in a new way. The bits and pieces begin to fall into place. After a few holes, your entire perception of yourself and the game begins to change. A new self-confidence arises. You can even describe your performance with a vocabulary that until today had eluded you. Lo and behold, at game's end, several strokes have come off of your all-time low score. You have evolved.

In much the same way, this book (Use the title here, if you prefer, Steve) marks the beginning of a new era. It is the culmination of many years of cultural, environmental, and foodstyle advances. Within these pages, what were until now separate and distinct fields of endeavor have come together, artistically united in a fashion that will bring the reader to newfound understandings of a bigger picture of healthful living.

As a species, we stand on the precipice of survival. We can choose to continue doing what we have always done in the past, in which case the demise of the human race is predictable. Or we can move forward, experiment, and make lifestyle modifications. Armed with better information, humans tend to make better decisions. I believe that reading this book will leave you better informed, make you a better person, and give you many of the tools that you need to emerge from the cultural cocoon as the butterfly that we all wish to become. In health abundance, naturally,
